Producing my first digital series, "Emerging"

Kai Williams

I was honored with the chance to produce my own short-form digital series, “Emerging” as an intern working with SCETV this summer.

I had no idea what to expect, as I’ve only ever made short films in school. To go from a child watching educational shows on SCETV to later working on a series for this same organization has been such a rewarding experience. I knew I wanted to do something different but still fit the mission of the organization and what they stand for. I was initially stumped, but one day, my mom offhandedly suggested I do something related to art. When she said that, it came to me easily. I didn’t know how I hadn’t thought of that earlier, being an artist myself, and always looking for ways to incorporate art into my video work.

The concept for the series was easy enough, but I had no idea the work that would have to go into turning my idea into a reality. I spent almost a month finding and reaching out to various young artists around South Carolina. I came to many dead ends, and at one point, didn’t think I’d be able to find enough artists to interview. I talked to my supervisor about being a little discouraged, but she reassured me that everything would work out. And after that, it seemed like it did! I met so many cool young artists, all with the potential to go far in their careers, and it inspired me to pursue my art more seriously as well.

I cannot overstate just how impactful this internship and opportunity has been for me. When I started this summer, I was honestly at a place where I felt like I was losing my passion for film and video production, but this job has shown me that there are so many ways I can take on my path, that I shouldn’t limit myself to any one thing.
