Detective Bonz and the SC History Mystery | ETV Classics

As Detective Bonz works to solve the mystery of who stole the South Carolina history textbooks, his student helpers are gathering information to allow the South Carolina history classes to continue. The interesting element is exactly how and where they are gathering that information. And what exactly is a Paw Pilot?

Detective Bonz and the SC History Mystery consists of six chapters, each investigating various historical periods in South Carolina.

Detective Bonz and the SC History Mystery: Part 1

Detective Sherlock Bonz, the canine crime fighter is hired to find out who stole the 3rd grade history books at Sandlapper Elementary School. The 3rd graders need to study for a state-wide SC history test, and the high scorers will be invited to compete in a televised SC history game show.

Detective Bonz begins gathering clues with the help of some 3rd grade students. Together their goals are to catch the thief and to research SC history facts using Detective Bonz's "Paw Pilot" computer in order to help 3rd graders study for the test.

The students learn to operate the time machine and find themselves transported back through time to Ancient SC where the students meet Native Americans who teach them about various tribes, their traditions, games, housing, the origin of body paint, and river names derived from specific tribes and their meanings.

Detective Bonz and the SC History Mystery: Part 2

Detective Bonz finds new clues, and his student helpers keep investigating facts about SC to help all 3rd graders study for the big state-wide test. They time travel back to the first Spanish explorers at Winyah Bay.

Next, they meet explorer Ribault from France, followed by English settlers and Lords Proprietors. As the computer transports them to early Charlestown, they learn about the prosperity and importance of the state's largest port city and meet some of the treacherous pirates that sailed on SC's coast, including Stede Bonnet, “The Gentleman Pirate” and lady pirate, Anne Bonny.

Detective Bonz and the SC History Mystery: Part 3

While Detective Bonz continues tracking down clues and possible suspects, his student helpers have engaged with the time machine during recess. This time, they landed at Charlestown Harbor in 1776 and observed the preparations of Colonel William Moultrie and other citizens preparing to fight the British and win their independence from England.

Later, they visit the swamps near Georgetown and are offered possum stew by Swamp Fox (Francis Marion) and meet Andrew Pickens and Thomas Sumter. They hear the secret tricks Swamp Fox used to fool the British soldiers and help win the Revolutionary War.

The children zoom through many locations, to Columbia to learn why the state chose a new capital when SC joined the Union and learn about our state song and geography.

Detective Bonz and the SC History Mystery: Part 4

At recess, Kevin tells his classmates that he can't time travel with the kids because he hasn't finished his homework. The others engage the time machine and take off landing in 1844 at the huge plantation of Eliza Lucas Pinckney. There was concern about slaves escaping from the plantations as they provided the labor to keep the huge crops of rice, cotton, and indigo growing, expanding wealth of plantation owners. There is a discussion about Quakers and abolitionists.

The children overhear several slaves planning their escape, hearing phrases like the drinking gourd, underground railroad and safe houses and about how clues to escape could be provided in quilts.

Later, the students talk to a Union soldier about the Civil War. He shows tintype photographs of Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, and Lee.

Detective Bonz and the SC History Mystery: Part 5

On the playground, Detective Bonz found wheelbarrow tracks, a box of food wrap, sunscreen, all possible clues to the missing text books. The students share the secret of the time machine with science teacher Mr. Gaston and while in the Science Lab, he comes up with a song to teach them about the regions of SC. Engaging the time machine, they find themselves at the State Farmers' Market talking with peach farmers.

Later, they visit with Gullah people who tell them about some of the l traditions on the Sea Islands of SC. Next, they arrive at Table Rock State Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Upon their return, the students find out that SCETV is broadcasting a SC Game Show featuring the kids who score the highest on the state social studies test including Detective Bonz’s helpers as they had the highest test scores in the school.

Detective Bonz and the SC History Mystery: Part 6

The SC Game Show is being broadcast from SCETV television studios and all of Detective Bonz's assistants are contestants because they scored so well on their state social studies tests. Detective Bonz is concerned because he has not found the thief, but he hatches a plan involving the use of a history book borrowed from another school for bait and Kevin's lucky spool of fishing line.

During the show, the contestants are asked questions about SC history, nature facts, state symbols, famous South Carolinians, athletes, and other facts about the Palmetto State. Can you guess what happens at the end of the show?
