Rex Garniewicz, President & CEO

Founded in 1985, the Coastal Discovery Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate located at Honey Horn, a 70-acre historic site on Hilton Head Island. The museum's mission is to inspire people to care for the Lowcountry and deepen their understanding of the region’s history, culture, art, and fragile coastal environment.

The museum offers exhibitions, tours, workshops, and seasonal programs for all ages. Indoors, permanent and rotating exhibitions highlight regional stories and broader themes. Our gallery features curated shows by local, national, and international artists working in a wide range of media and styles.

Outdoors, visitors can walk shaded trails beneath centuries-old live oaks, explore the beauty of nature in the camellia and heritage gardens, and observe our wildlife in the maritime forest, butterfly habitat, salt marsh, and dragonfly pond. A large, covered pavilion and terrace overlooking Jarvis Creek provide the perfect venue for weddings, community gatherings, and private events.

This fall, the museum celebrates its 40th anniversary with two new speaker series:

  • Legends & Luminaries of Hilton Head (select Thursdays) features individuals who have helped shape the island — artists, historians, innovators, and community leaders—sharing personal stories and reflections.
  • Revolutionary Reflections (select Wednesdays) looks ahead to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, with talks by scholars and historians exploring the war’s pivotal events and legacy, including South Carolina’s prominent role.

“The museum’s partnership with South Carolina Public Radio is a meaningful way to connect with people who value education, history, and culture, and who actively support organizations that enrich public life,” says Rex Garniewicz, the museum’s president and CEO.

A longtime listener and supporter, he adds, “On weekends, A Way With Words is a special treat. Having worked with co-host Grant Barrett when I was in San Diego, hearing his voice on the radio is like having a casual conversation with a brilliant friend.”
