York County’s legal fight with the Carolina Panthers continues in the wake of the team’s aborted site project in Rock Hill. And that fight could be moving to Delaware. Scott Morgan has an update.
On Wednesday, a federal court judge said that the $21 million lawsuit involving York County and team owner David Tepper’s company GT Real Estate cannot be heard in a South Carolina court.
That’s a win for Tepper and company, who filed the civil suit against York County in Delaware last month. The suit claims the county misused $21 million in public money connected to a now-dead entertainment and front-office project intended for Rock Hill.
York County countered that Tepper’s company mishandled the money, and that the city had not lived up to its bond obligations.
Tepper was looking to keep the suit out of South Carolina. According to the federal court decision, it will be up to a bankruptcy judge whether the suit will go before a civil jury in Delaware.
