Enhanced Wildfire Risk Continues Today

There's an elevated risk for rapid wildfire spread today, and outdoor burning is discouraged.

Relative humidity levels across the Palmetto State have dropped in the wake of two cold fronts: Last week's storm system and a dry front that nudged through the state on Saturday. In addition to the dry atmosphere, wind speeds are expected to sustain near 10 mph Monday afternoon with 15 to 20 mph gusts possible. These weather conditions are fully supportive of wildfire spread.

Wildfire vulnerability is especially high in the Pee Dee, and Low Country today. According to the latest report from the US Department of Agriculture, these regions are classified as under a moderate drought. Drying vegetation in these areas could serve as additional fodder for wildfire proliferation.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and local burn bans may be in effect. Check with local government offices before starting any fires, and always follow appropriate burn procedures.

Dry conditions are expected to last over the state through the first half of the week. By Thursday, another cold front should arrive from the west. Downpours will become increasingly likely, and a few strong thunderstorms will be possible too.
