This year’s session of the General Assembly formally wrapped-up on Thursday, May 12, 2022.
State lawmakers adjourned without approving next year’s state operating budget, but they’ll return for a brief session next month to try and resolve House and Senate differences in the spending plan. Teacher salaries, employee pay raises, reductions in personal income tax rates, and how much or if any of $1 Billion in higher than expected tax revenues should be returned to tax filers in the form of rebates must be agreed to prior to the new fiscal year which begins July 1.
Besides the budget, the House and Senate agreed to a narrow list of items that can be taken up next month. Consideration of vetoes, and redistricting are on the list. Also, Republican leaders made sure they will be able to consider more abortion restrictions if as expected the U-S Supreme Court overturns Roe-V-Wade, and clears the way for states to outlaw abortions. Majority leader Shane Massey said that’s a priority for Senate Republicans
