Claudette Moves Away, But Unsettled Tuesday Follows

Radar Tuesday Afternoon

Claudette regained tropical storm intensity early Monday morning over eastern North Carolina, but it's moving away from the Palmetto State. A separate cold front approaching from the west will boost the number of showers and strong thunderstorms on Tuesday.

A break in the weather is expected on Monday in between the weather systems; only a few showers or a thunderstorm are in the forecast. This comes a mere 24 hours after more than 2 inches of rain fell in Richland and Lexington counties, prompting the National Weather Service to issue Flash Flood Warnings there. A separate area of 2 to 5 inches of rain fell in parts of Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Charleston counties over the weekend based on radar estimates and rain gauge data.

A strong cold front over the Midwest will make a move toward South Carolina on Tuesday. The warm, unstable air ahead of the front fueled severe thunderstorms from Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa to the eastern Great Lakes States on Sunday. As of Monday morning, more than 140 reports of wind damage had been reported, along with large hail, and even a tornado in Iowa. Widespread severe storms are unlikely here on Tuesday, but there may be spotty reports of wind damage from microbursts thanks to the extensive moisture that will be in place. Downpours may deposit another 1 to 2 inches of rain, particularly from the Midlands to the coast, and there could be higher amounts near more persistent thunderstorms. Areas that saw heavy rain over the weekend are susceptible to flash flooding again on Tuesday.

The front is expected to stall over the Lowcountry Wednesday and Thursday. That means areas from the Midlands to the Upstate will see fewer thunderstorms, but communities closer to the front will still have a chance of mainly afternoon thunderstorms.
