South Carolina ETV and the University of South Carolina Beaufort's 'By The River' to premiere new season Oct. 1

By The River

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina ETV (SCETV) today announced that season three of By The River will premiere on Thursday, October 1 at 8:30 p.m. on SCETV. Achieved in partnership with the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB), the weekly, 30-minute literature-focused series is filmed at ETV Lowcountry in Beaufort, S.C.

Season three of By The River features an exciting line up of in-depth interviews with authors, including Wanda Lloyd, Nathalie Dupree, Marcus Amaker, Wiley Cash, Susan Zurenda, Johnathan Haupt, Brad Taylor, Dana Ridenour, Whitney McDuff and Elise Blackwell. The interviews are followed by a Lowcountry Poet’s Corner, featuring poems read by Lowcountry poets, such as Derek Berry, Marcus Amaker, Holland Perryman, Brian Slusher, Terri McCord and Jackie Morfesis. Attendees of the Conroy Center Children’s Camp also participate in poetry readings, along with finalists from the South Carolina Poetry Out Loud Program – Taylor Wade of Andrew Jackson High School in Lancaster, S.C. and Anna Matson of Aiken High School in Aiken, S.C.

By The River is filmed on a Bronze Telly Award-winning set, which was designed as a coastal home library overlooking the river in order to create an intimate interview setting as authors discuss their books, writing lives, and inspirations. The show is hosted by Holly Jackson, director of Operations and Content at ETV Lowcountry and is produced by Dr. Caroline E. Sawyer, assistant professor of Communication Studies at USCB. The entire crew for the show consists of Communication Studies students at USCB.

Students who worked on the production of season three include Cassandra Headden, Makayla Bing, Jeremy Smalls, Nicole Folzenlogen, Lauren Henderson, Emily Firster and USCB student & ETV Endowment Intern Sabrina May. The students each play a vital role in the show’s success, performing critical tasks, such as researching and pre-interviewing authors, production assisting, technical directing, floor directing, producing the Poet’s Corner and creating promotional materials.

New episodes will premiere Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. on SCETV before being re-aired on the South Carolina Channel at 9 p.m. Repeat broadcasts will also take place on Sundays at 5 p.m. on SCETV and at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on ETV World.

QUOTES:

“This season was an experience for all of us, and I’m proud to say that we rose to the challenge. Following the CDC & SCDHEC guidelines, we limited production personnel, wore masks, limited episode tapings to one a day, cleaned the facilities before and after tapings and maintained social distancing. It was truly a team effort. I was really impressed too with the resilience of the USCB students and their commitment to keeping the work environment safe and everyone healthy.” –ETV Lowcountry Director of Operations and Content Holly Jackson

“All while following CDC & SCDHEC guidelines, our students learned a lot about production during a pandemic! We know employers want to hire students who have both a degree and experience. This show not only gives our students hands-on work on a professionally-produced show, but this year it gave them a once in a life-time experience in how to be flexible and adaptive because of the pandemic. This experience strongly supports our university’s mission and fits into our Students Connected program in that it provides an unparalleled learning experience in the community.” –USCB Assistant Professor for Communication Studies Dr. Caroline Sawyer

“This has been a great opportunity to gain new skills I have never used before and take those into the future with me.” –USCB Communication Studies graduate Nicole Folzenlogen
