“Something in These Hills: The Culture of Family Land in Southern Appalachia”

Native American Studies Center (USC Lancaster)
What is the “something in these hills” that ties mountain families to family land in the southern Appalachians? This ethnography explores two themes: the duality of the southern Appalachians as both a menacing and majestic landscape and the emotional relationship to family land characteristic of long-term residents. Using a carefully crafted cultural lens, Dr. John M. Coggeshall, Professor of Anthropology at Clemson University, explains how family land metaphorically becomes another member of kin groups. To attend via Zoom, register via this link: [1] [1]
