“How Indigenous People Helped Start and Win the American Revolution”

Native American Studies Center

“How Indigenous People Helped Start and Win the American Revolution” Professor Woody Holton, Department of History, USC Columbia.

Native Americans seeking to retain their sacred lands and spiritual strength exerted surprisingly strong indirect influence on the British Parliament, resulting in policies that infuriated thousands of white colonists and helped propel them toward declaring independence. Then in the ensuing war, Native warriors achieved much more success than many historians realize, for instance, thwarting more than a dozen U.S. efforts to capture Fort Detroit, where they received arms and ammunition from their British allies.
