Glimpses into the Past: Postcards of Sumter
The Sumter County Museum (SCM) is proud to present its next rotating exhibit entitled, Glimpses into the Past: Postcards of Sumter. The exhibit will open July 8, 2021 in the Sumter County Museum’s Heritage Education Center, McKenzie Hall. The exhibit features an assortment of postcards highlighting scenes of Sumter’s past from the late 1800’s to today. These include images of Main Street, city landmarks, schools, churches and synagogues, and restaurants, hotels, and area businesses. The exhibit will cover the history of postcards and their collection today. The museum has selected a variety of postcards to reprint and enlarge for better viewing, but will also feature actual postcards, some of which have been mailed to and/or from Sumter residents. The exhibit will remain on display throughout the remainder of the year, allowing staff to rotate the postcards on display during this time. The end of the exhibit includes a “Create Your Own Postcard of Sumter County” interactive station. Visitors are asked to design a postcard highlighting a significant or memorable landmark or feature of the county. The museum will post some of these for display. Glimpses into the Past: Postcards of Sumter will also include an interactive online component making these postcard images accessible to all. Anyone interested can visit www.sumterpostcards.com to view some of the museum’s collection of postcards. To accompany the postcard theme, SCM invites guests to enjoy the recently unveiled mural on the side wall of its Heritage Education Center. SCM worked with the Sumter County Cultural Center as part of their Creative Canvas project to commission artist @Christoph Johnson to develop and paint a mural for the museum. The mural is designed to mimic an old postcard with the words “Greetings from Sumter County Museum” featuring components of museum buildings and exhibit subjects. Visitors can pick up a brochure to learn more about the mural and the images displayed on it. SCM is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Free admission is available to all guests this summer through Labor Day. Regular admission will resume on Thursday, September 9th at a rate of $5 adults, $2 for students (6-17) and seniors (65+), and free for children five and under. Combo tickets allowing admission to all museum sites including the Temple Sinai Jewish History Center will be available at a discounted rate of $8 for adults and $3 for students (6-17) and seniors (65+).
