Girls Rock Columbia Camper Showcase

Saturday, July 20, 2019 3:00 PM

Central Energy Facility
2030 Gregg Street
Columbia, SC 29201

Youth of Columbia will take over the stage for the seventh consecutive year
on Saturday, July 20th for the annual Girls Rock Columbia Camper Showcase at
the newly opened Central Energy Facility outside Segra Park. During the week
of camp, girls and trans*youth ages 8-17 attend instrument instruction with
volunteer local musicians who share their love of music with the next
generation of rockers. Campers are grouped into bands and collaborate to
write an original song in only five days. The Camper Showcase is when they
show our community what they’ve learned and command an audience!

In addition to writing and performing an original song, campers will
participate in empowering workshops including consent and self-defense,
podcasting, yoga, writing and recording your own demo, using art for
advocacy, guitar pedals, neurodiversity awareness, accessibility, making a
vision board, self-care, D.I.Y screen printing their very own band shirt
designs, and having conversations through their work that break down barriers
of gender, race, class, age, and ability.

Girls Rock Columbia believes that it is our duty to amplify voices that are
often told to remain silent, so we’ve made it our mission to help girls and
trans and gender nonconforming youth harness the confidence and power that is
already within them to speak their truths and share their lived experiences
while empowering them to rock on and take off!
