Catawba and Cherokee American Revolution Symposium

There will be an outstanding two-day program on Revolutionary War history, the Catawba and Cherokee American Revolution Symposium, on Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26. The role of Native Americans in the American Revolution has scarcely been told. The Catawba Nation’s assistance to the Patriot forces in South Carolina was tremendously important. The adversarial relationship with the Cherokee was significant in the conflict, and the Cherokee Wars in 1776 reshaped South Carolina’s future. 

Additional history that will be discussed is archaeology of Catawba towns in Lancaster County and a Cherokee town on the Clemson University campus, Indian trails and the landscape in Revolutionary times, and the role of Native women. The Symposium begins Friday, Sept 25 at noon with a Lunch N Learn program at the Native American Studies Center, 119 South Main St, Lancaster. 

A reception courtesy of Nutramax Laboratories begins at 5 pm at the Native American Studies Center, followed by a presentation at 6 pm on mapping Catawba movements during the Revolution. On Saturday, the location is at USC Lancaster in the Bradley Building, 476 Hubbard Drive. Registration and breakfast begins at 8 am, followed by presentations in the morning, lunch, and presentations in the afternoon.
