James L. Petigru

James Louis Petigru (1789-1863) was a lawyer, jurist, and Unionist politician known for his famous quote “South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum.” Petigru was born in Flatwoods, South Carolina and served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and as State Attorney General.
