War Dog Memorial Dedicated in Columbia

November 23, 2015 - Posted in Palmetto Scene by Katie Geer

A seven-foot bronze statue now stands in Memorial Park in the city of Columbia honoring the war dogs that have fought throughout the decades. The statue is in the form of a Vietnam dog handler and a German Shepherd, to pay tribute to the 4,000 dogs that served in the war. Johnny Mayo spearheaded the private and donation-funded monument through his efforts to bring awareness to these often forgotten four-legged soldiers.
