Making Connections with Natural History Featuring Rudy Mancke, Series I is a new ETV Teacher Recertification online course offered for 20 renewal credits and designed for South Carolina educators on all grades levels, in all subject areas. This first course - Series I - features new “Natural History Connects” segments where Rudy talks about naturalists and more, along with special programs about birds and butterflies, sea creatures and Hurricane Hugo. Plus, we’ll look environmental education in our schools and explore video/online resources. This course will allow teachers to engage K-12 learners and discover how they can help students make connections with the world around them. This is another opportunity for SC teachers to learn from Naturalist Rudy Mancke!* (Recommended for teachers of all grade levels)

*NOTE: Educators who have taken the 60 renewal credit course Natural History In and Out of Classroom with Rudy Mancke may take both “Making Connections …” Series I and Series II. These two 20 renewal credit courses contain different content from the Natural History 60 renewal credit course.

Making Connections with Natural History Featuring Rudy Mancke, Series II is an ETV Teacher Recertification online course offered for 20 renewal credits and designed for South Carolina educators on all grades levels, in all subject areas. This second course - Series II – features other “Natural History Connects” segments where Rudy talks more about diversity, connections and resiliency, and a special series of programs with experts who talk about how nature came back after the Chernobyl event. Participants will utilize ETV’s free resources, including content available online in StreamlineSC and Knowitall. This course allows teachers to engage K-12 learners and discover how they can help students make connections with the world around them and is another opportunity for SC teachers to learn from Naturalist Rudy Mancke!* (Recommended for teachers of all grade levels)

*NOTE: It is recommended that educators participate first in Series I and then in Series II.  Also, educators who have taken the 60 renewal credit course Natural History In and Out of Classroom with Rudy Mancke may take both “Making Connections …” Series I and Series II. These two 20 renewal credit courses contain different content from the Natural History 60 renewal credit course.

Natural History In and Out of the Classroom with Rudy Mancke 

Course Dates:  Winter session - January  23 – April 29, 2016
(REQUIRED final class meeting TBD (either April 23 or 29) – date will be decided asap) 
Recertification: 60 Renewal Credits (NO graduate credit) 
Cost: $200.00 per participant 

​ETV recertification courses are only open to educators with a SC teaching certificate and approved by the South Carolina Department of Education for renewal credit purposes.

This online recertification course for 60 renewal credits assists educators on all grade levels, in all subject areas with in integrating natural history into their curriculum. Learn about nature with Naturalist Rudy Mancke and see how you can take your students right out the door of your school to learn about the world around them!

The course is structured around four components:

  • A Teacher Workshop that explains what natural history is, why we should study it, and how to integrate it into the classroom
  • A Field Study that shows teachers how the school yard can be used as an outdoor classroom
  • Show and Tell Nature Lessons that provide an in-depth look at mountains to the sea, geology, skulls and bones, beach combing, fossils, insects, and snakes
  • NatureScene programs are used as virtual fieldtrips to learn more about natural history. This course was produced by ITV with SCETV and is now facilitated by ETV Education

SYNOPSIS

(Read through all before beginning work in course as assignments are connected!)

Participants must view ALL of the course video lessons online in ETV Learn, a Moodle platform. View course video lessons in following sequence:

  1. An Overview of the Course
  2. A Teacher Workshop
  3. A Field Study
  4. Show and Tell Nature Lessons, five NatureScene progams. 

Assignment 1

  • View Rudy’s Overview, Teacher Workshop programs (3) and Field Study programs (3), and during this time also choose a well-known naturalist and write a 5-7 page report on him/her (double spaced/ size 11 font), plus bibliography. In report, include information on birth, family, discoveries, and impact of work on generations to follow. Bibliography should include at least 6 sources - books and Websites. (NOTE: Steve Irwin not accepted.)
  • Deadline: Complete viewing & post report in ETV Learn by February 23.  

Assignment 2

  • View Show and Tell Nature video lessons in each section and write a discussion topic response of @100 words for each topic. (Identify new information learned; how you would use this in your teaching.) While responding in the Moodle Discussion Forum, you are encouraged to read/respond to other participants’ posts.
  • Deadline: Complete viewing & post in ETV Learn Discussion Forum by March 20. 

Assignment 3

  •  Make sure you have viewed ALL video lessons as well as FIVE NatureScene programs. To view NatureScene lessons in StreamlineSC, enter “Rudy Mancke” in search box. If you do not have a StreamlineSC account, contact Bette at bjamison@scetv.org. Based on what you have learned through viewing ALL video lessons in the four components of this course (A Teacher Workshop, A Field Study, Show and Tell Nature Lessons, and NatureScene programs), create FOUR detailed lesson plans (one for each component) that would be useful in your classroom and that you can share with other educators.
  • Deadline: Post all FIVE lessons plans at one time in ETV Learn by April 24. (See sample lesson plan components; directions for posting.) 

Assignment 4

  • You should have already viewed FIVE NatureScene programs online in StreamlineSC to complete assignment 3. Now for each of these NatureScene programs create a list of the plants and animals mentioned in each program. (Be sure to put title of program at top of each list.)
  • Deadline: Post flora/fauna list in ETV Learn by April 27. 

FINAL CLASS MEETING

  • Attend REQUIRED final class meeting with Rudy. This will be held either on Saturday, April 29, 10 am – 12:30 pm, at ETV Telecommunications Center, 1041 George Rogers Blvd., Columbia.  
  • NOTE: This meeting is mandatory.
  • *Please bring a copy of your report on a Naturalist to meeting so you can share facts with group. Course evaluation/input form will be completed at meeting and certificates distributed.
