A Literary Tour of SC, Series I

(Recommended for teachers of all grade levels)

In this ETV Teacher Recertification course, entitled A Literary Tour of SC, Series I, we meet twelve nationally recognized authors who call South Carolina home. In the video series produced by ITV with ETV, ETV cameras traveled across the state to interview thirty-seven authors with connections to our state, learning about them, their passion for reading and writing, and their research and writing process. Through these lessons we learn what these authors have to say about making characters come alive on the page, how they create plot for their stories and keep track of the action. Additionally, they discuss how important research is to any story, both fiction and non-fiction.

In this first group of twelve authors who make up the ETV Teacher Recertification course A Literary Tour of SC, Series I, we learn from a diverse set of writers with varied backgrounds, education and stories to share. This professional development series is a master-teacher series where educators can learn first-hand about writing from some of the best writers and then share this information with students (SCETV produced).

In this self paced ETV Teacher Recertification course, entitled A Literary Tour of SC, Series II, recommended for teachers of any grade level, we meet 13 more nationally recognized authors who call south Carolina home. In the video series by same name produced by ITV with ETV, we interviewed 37 authors with connections to our state, learning about them, their passion for reading and writing, and their research and writing process. 

In this second course, we continue to learn from another diverse set of writers with varied backgrounds, education and stories to share as they talk about making characters come alive on the page, how they create plot for their stories and keep track of the action, and how importnant research is to any story, both fiction and non-fictions. Recommended that teachers participate in Series I and then Series II. (SCETV produced)

In A Literary Tour of SC, Series III, we meet thirteen more nationally recognized authors who call South Carolina home.  In the video series produced by ITV with ETV, ETV cameras travelled across the state to interview thirty-seven authors with connections to our state, learning about them, their passion for reading and writing, and their research and writing process.  Through these lessons we learn what these authors have to say about making characters come alive on the page, how they create plot for their stories and keep track of the action. Plus, they discuss how important research is to any story, both fiction and non-fiction.

In this third group of thirteen authors in Series III, we learn from a diverse set of writers with varied backgrounds, education and stories to share. And, in addition to reviewing the steps of the writing process, the course outlines seven techniques for effective writing. This professional development series is a master-teacher series where educators can learn first-hand about writing from some of the best writers and then share this information with students. Recommended that teachers participate in Series II, Series II and then Series III (SCETV produced).

Artifacts & Fiction: Workshop in American Literature, Grades 6-12

This self paced workshop for middle and high school teachers introduces techniques for reading cultural, political, and religious artifacts and connecting them to the literature they teach. In each video program, experts in multiple disciplines do close analysis of a wide range of visual, print, and physical artifacts. The experts engage on-camera teachers in a discussion of the artifacts and how they can enhance the study of works of literature. These teachers then use artifacts with their own students to help deepen their understanding of the historical, political, and social contexts of the literature they read. Throughout the workshop, participants will learn and practice a six-step process for choosing and using artifacts successfully with their students.

Teaching Reading: K-2 Workshop

The Teaching Reading: K – 2 Workshop self paced course is designed around Annenberg/CPB Professional Development Workshops. Reviewing critical topics such as current research on reading instruction and how it informs classroom practices, these eight videos demonstrate through observation in real reading classes how to develop the literacy skills of every student. The participants are continuously engaged in utilizing teaching strategies and comprehension skills to improve the reading and writing abilities of their students. It is recommended that participants take this course first and then the "A Library of Classroom Practices" course second.

Teaching Reading: K – 2 Workshop: A Library of Classroom Practices self paced course features the teaching practices of a diverse cross-section of kindergarten through second grade teachers from across the country. The teachers introduce their students to reading through a variety of methodologies. The library includes classroom videos showing teachers and students engaged in effective reading practices.

The Teaching Reading: 3-5 Workshop self paced course is designed around Annenberg/CPB Professional Development Workshops. This course affords participants the opportunity to help students progress from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." In this one-hour course, the first eight half-hour videos show literacy experts discussing both current research/techniques for learning to read, and how to teach a diverse range of students. These techniques demonstrate actual classroom activities that emphasize such topics as fluency, word study, and assessment. The second eight half-hour videos highlight in greater detail the activities discussed earlier. Both the veteran teacher and one new to teaching will find ideas/techniques to supplement their teaching.

Conversations in Literature, Grades 6-12

The Conversations in Literature, Grades 6-12 self paced course is designed around Annenberg/CPB Professional Development Workshops for teachers of English, grades six through twelve. In this video workshop, teachers, academics, and authors gather as a “community of readers,” immersing themselves in classic and contemporary literature from Hamlet to works by Langston Hughes, James Dickey, and Alice Walker. These participants, led by Dr. Judith Langer, model the habits of effective readers in an approach known as “envisionment building.” The readers develop interpretations by stepping into and moving through the text using their own unique perspectives. Develop your own reading community using these video programs with coordinated Web site and print guide, and learn how intuition, background experiences, and personal involvement construct meaning for readers.

The Engaging with Literature: A Workshop for Teachers, Grades 3-5 self paced course is designed around Annenberg/CPB Professional Development Workshops. Providing participants with opportunities to observe teachers throughout the country demonstrate the techniques and philosophies they use daily, these nine video lessons present activities on how to guide students to become effective readers of literature. To ensure that students make sense of the information they discover, emphasis is placed on their talking, reading, and writing about that information.

The In Search of the Novel, Grades 6-12 self paced course is designed around Annenberg/CPB Professional Development Workshops for teachers of English, grades six through twelve. While it explores fresh approaches to teaching the novel, it also confirms what English teachers know. Readers experience novels in various and individual ways since they bring their own lives to them. The course video lessons show unscripted documentary, with real situations and real people—novelists, teachers, and a wide variety of students, grades six through twelve, from many parts of the country. You will see them as they explore and investigate and probe. The videos feature innovative classroom activities, interviews with contemporary novelists, and ten of the most popular novels on school reading lists.
