Edda L. Fields-Black is an American historian and professor whose scholarship focuses on African American history, the African diaspora, and the history of slavery. She is the author of Deep Roots: Rice Farmers in West Africa and the African Diaspora and Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War. Her work bridges academic research and public history, emphasizing Black resistance and agency. Her most recent book is Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom During the Civil War (published 2024), a narrative history that won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for History and the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.
