Charles Appleby served as a panelist on Palmetto Perspectives: Education Special - Smart Thinking in the Age of AI.

Charles Appleby is an experienced strategic and legal advisor with almost twenty years of experience in the private and public sectors. In his last role, he served as General Counsel for a newly formed S.C. House of Representatives Legislative Oversight Committee tasked with studying state agency operations and laws. His work helped the committee earn national recognition for public policy changes, program improvements, and dollar savings, every year from 2018 through 2022. 

In February 2023, Charles was jointly hired by the Department of Employment and Workforce, Department of Commerce, Department of Education, State Technical College System, and Commission on Higher Education to serve as the Senior Advisor for the Coordinating Council for Workforce Development. As part of his work, in 2024 and 2025, Charles served as a member of the Southern Regional Education Board’s (SREB) Commission on Artificial Intelligence in Education. The Commission, chaired by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and co-chaired by Brad D. Smith, president of Marshall University in West Virginia and former Silicon Valley CEO, brought together policymakers, education leaders, and business executives from SREB’s 16 states.
