11-6-07 Hyams Garden and Accent Store, Charleston SC

There are gardening centers that specialize in certain types of plant material. Then, there are garden centers that specialize in just about everything for the home landscape. Such is the case for Hyams Garden and Accent Store located on James Island, just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. Join Roland Alston and Team Making It Grow as they visit with George Hyams, a former Clemson football player, and owner of Hyams Garden and Accent Store.

Team Making It Grow had the chance to visit John Morris in Greenville, SC, where he not only has a formal garden he has a lot of fun with his garden.  John shares of how you can make any garden look appealing while incorporating some aspects of fun.

11-20-07 Thanksgiving Special

Team “Making It Grow!” had the opportunity to visit one of the largest turkey farms in South Carolina. We found out about the turkeys and their expensive feed bill. We also had the chance to eat a delicious Thanksgiving dinner by a local caterer around Camden, South Carolina.   This is one Thanksgiving Dinner you don’t want to miss.

10-23-07 Ghost Creek Gourds - Laurens, SC

Roland Alston visits a large 14 acre gourd farm near Laurens, SC. Ghost Creek Gourds is one of the largest gourd farms in South Carolina, growing a wide variety of different shapes and sizes of gourds right here in the Palmetto State.

10-16-07 SC State Fair - Columbia, SC

The South Carolina State Fair is well known for its delicious food and its abundance of rides, but it’s also an educational event for all South Carolinians. Roland, Amanda, and Debbie take us to the Ellison Building, and for those who are interested in horticulture you will see why it’s educational in nature.

Team Making It Grow visits Black River Tools a family enterprise just outside of Manning, South Carolina which has come up with wonderful ways to make bird houses that can add beauty to your yard and feed our feathered friends.

10-2-07 Mount Vintage - North Augusta, SC

Roland Alston and Team Making It Grow visit Mount Vintage in Edgefield County, which is known for giving South Carolina ten governors, and their tremendous amount of history and gardening. Following along with a current trend, Mount Vintage has taken an old plantation and turned it into a golf course and resort area. Join us as we explore the beautiful landscaping of this historic resort area.

Team Making It Grow visits James Island, SC, where Roxanne Werowinski makes a difference in the Palmetto State by not only gardening in her own yard, but also on public land by landscaping the right away. Showing how an individual gardener can make a difference in their community.

9-11-07 Nelson Smith's Private Garden - Greenwood, SC

The MIG Team wants to prove that gardening does have sentimental reasons for the gardeners who tend to them and this episodes guest is no exception. Rowland Alston visits Nelson Smith in Greenwood,SC. Alston discovers that old logs make great centerpieces for gardens and with every unique item in a garden there almost certainly is a unique story to go along with the item. Alston knows this and asks Smith to elaborate on that back-story. He does and said that he begged a friend to let him have the log and he did. The next step was accenting the log so Smith preceded to accent the log with Black Eyed Susan, hastas and some Begonias but that is not all there is a creepy alligator. Smith calls his Hasta Garden Shade Garden his “air conditioner in the morning.” If one visits Smith’s garden one will see circles for a reason because Smith has a large Plenum bush that rounded out quite nicely into a circular shape. Do you like containers to showcase your plants in? Well, if you do you are not alone because Smith does too! Please be aware that you will have to water the plants everyday in the containers even though it is a hard job.

The Dunes Golf Course - Myrtle Beach, SC

The host of “Making It Grow” Rowland Alston visits The Dunes Golf Course of Myrtle Beach, SC. Rowland Alston speaks with Steve Hamilton, Golf Course Superintendent of The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. Alston and Hamilton discuss the fact that the golf course is the second oldest golf course in The Grand Strand area. It was built in 1948.The oldest was built in 1927. Golfers who like the sight of water when they are golfing are in luck because The Dunes Golf Course features the lovely view of The Singleton Swash, which leads out into the ocean. Hamilton also reveals that the staff at The Dunes Golf Course try to copy the grasses found in the swash itself and bring them inward closer to the golf course. The MIG Team wants to know more about how to manage a golf course therefore Alston asks about many different processes. There is a putting grass that can withstand massive amounts of sodium and Hamilton goes on to explain the history behind the putting grass. He says that the putting grass is Seashore Pass Pallum, which is becoming more popular with today’s golfers and the golf industry. Hamilton has the understanding that the greens were brought over on slave ships. The slaves kicked the grass onto the beaches and it thrived near saltwater. This golf course is as clever as a fox. This golf course has many animal foxes in their dens.

8-21-07 Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories - Charlotte, NC

Did you ever wish to know about the growth and development of trees? The MIG team did as well so Rowland Alston paid a visit to The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories in Charlotte, NC. Alston talks with owner Robert Bartlett about the pride of this business being a family run business. To the family’s dismay they can not take pride in the fact that the Bartlett pear was named after them because it was not. The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories have a very well rounded staff six of the employees have P.H.D’s,, four of which work in Charlotte, NC, and several are HM professors at Clemson University. Alston also talks with Dr. Thomas Smiley is a researcher for Bartlett Tree Laboratories. Smiley and Alston got to the root of homeowners’ questions.

8-14-07 Tidewater Golf Course - N. Myrtle Beach, SC Rowland Alston of “Making It Grow” fame wants to visit a place that is caught like a sleeping giant between an inter-coastal waterway Cherrygrove offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and pleasure. Shaun Donahue, the golf superintendent of Tidewater Golf Club and plantation in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Standing on the 3rd tee is a golfer’s delight because a golfer can see the marsh located at Cherrygrove. Donahue and Alston also discuss types of grass found on the golfers’ course. The viewers and Alston discover that two different types of genetically bred grass are used.
8-7-07 Rose Banks Farm - Charleston, SC

Team MIG visits with an old gardening friend Sidi Limehouse of Rosebank Farms in the mid-90’s and they back again to discuss the expansion of the farm, which located in Charleston, SC. The expansion deals with having over 2,000 types of plants and Limehouse may not have rosy cheeks but that is fine because has several different types of roses to make up for this fact The Walnut Hill School and Museum may be found behind the farms. It has great history that a tie in nicely with farm itself and with Low Country S.C. Alston asks Limehouse to explain the history further. Limehouse says that the school was built in 1860 that Limehouse rescued and now it is a museum telling people about John’s Island. What is missing one might ask? Well, nothing except the chickens, roosters, and goats. Do not worry Limehose has thought of that as well. He has chickens, roosters and goats.

Marie Land's Garden - Manning, SC

“Making It Grow” has always wanted to relate the show to everyday viewers like yourselves so to bring home the down-home message of the show. Rowland Alston visits Master Gardener Marie Land in Manning S.C. When visiting her garden one can only say that she has a little bit of everything. Here are some spectacular facts about this residential house and a South Carolina history lesson at the same time. In 1995 the SC State house were uprooting some trees of the SC State House. The SC State Hose said that they would give the trees to any SC resident who would paid to get the trees of state house grounds and Land being the true plant lover that she is said that she would pay. She now has SC State House trees on her property and Land gives dedication to them. Alston marvels at this fact. This garden is a family affair because Land’s son crafted the entrance gates to her garden. Fish ponds are coming back at to Marie Land because has one. In addition to the many mystical features in Land’s garden there is a “secret garden” where fairies can be found. You may also put a penny in a jar to see a very pretty and ever-changing picture show!

Seven Oaks Plant Shop - Columbia, SC Owner Douglas Hull of Seven Oaks Pant Shop in Columbia S.C is very proud of the selection he offers the families of South Carolina but even prouder when Rowland Alston drops in for a visit to discuss just what type of selection they actually offer. Alston was first in admiration with how the shop is divided into places of sun-loving and shade-loving and shade-loving plants. The Seven Oaks Plant Shop has several novelty items such as the “bag of blooms” and I hope you love your veggies as well because The Seven Oaks Plant Shop has specialty veggie plants as well such as pepper plants. An episode recap this shop believes in having a wide selection of plants to complement S.C family Even Rowland Alston is impressed with the type of selection!
6-26-07 Brunson Wholesale Nursery - Alcolu, SC Have you had any bad dreams lately? Well, no worries because the MIG Team, which is headed by Rowland Alston is here to ease his faithful followers’ troubled minds! He visits with Jon Brunson owner of the Brunson Wholesale Nursery in Alcolu S.C to discuss the many solutions to his viewers’ many gardening woos Among the various topics Brunson and Alston discuss is the reasoning behind The Oak Leaf Holly. This pushes Brunson to explain that the holly plant has a leaf similar too the oak tree. The regret for this show is the same regret Alston has for every show. He did not have enough time to cover everything that needs to be covered.
6-19-07 Richburg Farms - Manning, SC Real-life experience comes to schoolchildren thanks to Linda Richburg of Richburg Farms in Manning S.C. She is also is head of The Manning Early Childhood Center as well. This is why she gets schoolchildren involved in the strawberry picking at her farm. Rowland Alston, the host of MIG, joins her have a very berry good time. Richburg says that the experience of picking a strawberry, working hard for it, and eating the strawberry will be an experience that the children will not soon forget. Alston agrees. He wants to act like a four- year- old and eat strawberries. He did not even need Cool Whip!
6-12-07 Embassy Suites - Columbia, SC; SC FFA Check it out! Roland Alston goes the Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia S.C because a little birdie told him that the plant presentations are beautiful While at Embassy Suites Alston met with Steve Graves, the General Manager of The Embassy Suites Hotel. These presentations are just on the inside of the hotel, which is even more intriguing for guests because the guests love to watch the plants get taken care of. Alston thought of this aspect and talks to Scott Blackwell of A Oak Farms in Greer S.C. This company takes care of the plants and it was Alston job to find out how. A Oak Farms specialize in tropical plants. Could this be true? Could plants act as a natural cleaning machine for hotel carpets and hotel air? So long housekeeping !
5-29-07 Charles WIlliams - McLellanville SC

Team MIG wants to experience the water with an extraordinary art form. Alston talks to Charles Williams a Gullah Artist in Mclellanville S.C. Williams makes cast nets. Alston wants to admire the brilliant craftsmanship of how the nets are put together piece by piece. There are big nets and small nets for as Williams humorously points out small fishermen at small ponds who catch small fish.

Team “Making It Grow!” had the opportunity to visit Hopeland Gardens in Aiken , SC. Hopeland Gardens is a 14 acre retirement community which has gardens that offer an escape from your overly busy day.  This is a special segment from the ETV Roadshow.  Don’t miss it!

5-15-07 Jarrett's Jungle - West Columbia, SC Speaking of taking a vacation on this week’s episode Rowland Alston visits a place that is very out of ordinary for West Columbia S.C called Jarrett’s Jungle. Jaclyn Macaulay and she said that orchards create big business but not only does Jarrett’s Jungle focus on flowering plants they also focus on citrus growing plants. This show features a two pound lemon that could quite possibly make 10 gallons of tea sour as Alston says. The jungle is moving towards some specialty items known as the European Flower Baskets. To continue with the cultured theme of the segment Alston discusses that the Japanese flowers offered. Macaulay also loves animals because she has a LoveBird and cats. She has them in her place of work.
5-8-07 Victoria Valley Vineyards - Cleveland, SC

The wine industry is growing in S.C and Rowland Alston host of making “Making It Grow” knows this fact but to investigate just how much the industry is indeed growing Rowland Alston visits Les Jayne of Victoria Valley Vineyards in Cleveland S.C. I trick you bet you thought I was going to say Cleveland Ohio. Jayne that says for his vineyard he says he uses bunch grapes instead of the typical muskadine grapes. Jayne believes that wine.tasting should be a joy for the palette and that a bunch grape produces that joy because one gets a combination of flavors such as a musty apple and a pear overlay. The vineyard takes great pride in their personal wines and to establish the unique taste of the wine the wine must stay in the barrel for nearly or two years. The wine is not the only that looks good at the vineyard the outside and inside has a European feel. Take us away!

5-1-07 Waccamaw Farms - Pawleys Island, SC Team MIG visits Waccawmaw Farms in Pawleys Island S.C, not for a vacation mind you but because Rowland Alston wants to see a multi-functional garden center in action and to do so he visits Jean Crouch Rothrock of Waccamaw Farms. She says their garden center is a one-stop shop for garden supplies and garden plants. The staff as said by Rothrock is friendly. Is anybody starting to pick up on a recurring theme Waccawmaw Farms also has a centering water fountain in their garden. The garden center is there to help people and their guests as part of their coastal experience know the requirements for the one can buy there. Waccamaw Farms also delivers. Look out! Do you see the color of rusty red? That is their pickup truck!

St. Timothy's Garden - Columbia, SC The St. Timothy Church in downtown Columbia specializes in having a quiet garden and to the concept of having a quiet garden in downtown Columbia The MIG Team talks to a member of St. Timothy’s Church Amy Moore and she says that members wanted to create a peaceful place for people to escape their busy lives. The members choose small plants for purposes of small spaces. The fountain that centers the garden drowns out the sounds of the city. Alston enjoyed it.
4-17-07 Woodcreek Farms Nursery - Elgin Who says that gardening can not stay in the family? At The Woodcreek Farms Nursery in Elgin S.C the trade of gardening has been passed down through generations. Rowland Alston spends the day with Robert Cooper owner of The Woodcreek Farms Nursery has in operation since 1981 and first owner of the nursery was Cooper’s father. Among the various topics discussed by Cooper and Alston were which should more sun and which plats should more shade?
4-10-07 Tiger Lily Florist - Charleston, SC

Gardeners take pride in the seeds sow and florists take pride in the flowers they cut. The Tiger Lilly Florist in Charleston S.C owned and operated by Manny and Clara Gonzales is no different. The MIG Team wanted to see first hand the effectiveness of running a great and respected flower shop. The Gonzales won second runner in Florist Review Magazine for Florist of the Year. They tell Rowland Alston that for weddings and business events tropical themes are in so next time you ever need bamboo visit The Tiger Lilly Florist!

4-3-07 Diane Nodine's Private Garden - Greer, SC This show is featuring a lady with a green thumb name Dianne Nodine Of Greer S.C. Rowland Alston visits Nodine to discuss how a garden still look beautiful in the bitter cold and for any season year round. Nodine reveals that winter is her favorite season of all. This fact pushes Nodine to show Alston holly berries on braches. She says you must go along with and listen to the structure of the season to create the perfect design for your garden.
3-27-07 Boykin Tree Farm - Boykin, SC The host of “Making It Grow” Rowland Alston acknowledges the desire for great home landscaping is growing by leaps and bounds in S.C. so he visits Alan Wooten owner of Boykin Tree Farm in Boykin S.C. Wooten has an s maple tree secret they are grown by known as graphing. You must prune your trees this is important to growing beautiful trees. This tip is coming from a man that grows the trees for the Boykin Country Christmas Parade. Wooten has also every tree for every landscape!
02-27-07 Irvin House Vineyards - Wadmawlaw, SC Move over California Wadmawlaw S.C is now joining in the wine business! Rowland Alston visits Jim Irvin of Irvin House Vineyards to investigate this new prospect. Irvin has a medical condition that does not allow him to drink regular kinds of wine. Well, he was determined to drink a glass of wine and needless to say that dream snowball into a full-time business that Irvin takes great pride in. He only uses top-quality Muscadine grapes. As the day went on and the conversion with Rowland Alston continued Irvin let Alston know what wine is his greatest pride and joy. It is a bit of southern sprit and a Hurricane Wine Flavored Vodka named “Firefly.”
02-20-07 Medicine Wheel Garden - Columbia, SC Is anybody out there sick? If anybody is take Rowland Alston lead and please visit Margaret Self at her Medicine Wheel Garden in Columbia S.C. Self explains the symbolism of the wheel in the middle of her garden. She says the wheel symbolizes the circle of life and that quartz crystal which is in the wheel is healing when in the ground. . Self makes this disclaimer before she explains the uses of the plants in her garden that she is not a doctor and because of time constraints details could not be given but more details of the uses the plants as medicine you may reach Self at this number (803)551-1191. 02-13-07 Garden of Faith - Lexington, SC

Team MIG rides over to Lexington to visit Erma Izard of Lexington Church of Christ to examine how their members incorporate their faith into a garden in front of the church. Izard explains why faith and gardening go hand in hand. She says the members of the church including her get to put their belief systems into action. The members want to create a welcoming environment. Rowland Alston admires the landscaping and the beautiful mixture of plants. The landscaping includes a water fountain and rocks. Alston points out an important part of the church which is the location the church on a wetland. Enjoy the landscaping and butterflies!

02-06-07 Trellises - Elgin, SC A professional baseball player now makes trellises This man goes by the name of Don Dillard now since there is a world of difference between baseball and making trellises Rowland Alston of “Making It Grow” fame visits him to find out what made Dillard interested in his current craft and what plant best grow on trellises. Dillard says a man in Anderson also makes trellises and Dillard asked if he could copy him because he loves working with his hands. Dillard and Alston continue their conversion with plants that best grow on trellises and honeysuckle is the best.
01-30-07 "Painting with Trees" - Boykin, SC Rowland Alston wants to learn about planting trees and painting with trees so he decides to visit a former lawyer in Boykin S.C who has some exotic plants. Alston admits that Rigdon Boykin’s way of gardening is quite different. Boykin explains he saw the Gotelli Collection a huge collection of evergreens and he got the idea of planting trees. The idea of planting trees is most common in Oregon and is where Boykin gets his trees. What do trees need most- water so to help with this aspect of planting trees Boykin brings in Tommy Marshall of Camden Landscaping in Camden S.C to take care of an elaborate watering system. Alston is intrigued and asks Marshall to better explain how the system works.

Kudzu Control - Spartanburg, SC

The MIG team visits Spartanburg S.C and the kudzu farm to join the fight for kudzu control by visiting Newt Hardie kudzu college and experiment station in order to show the public that kudzu is a major problem for their garden Since kudzu control is not well-known problem with a well-known solution in the world of gardening Rowland Alston questions with hard hitting questions to the long awaited answers and some disturbing yet hopeful facts. Alston’s only regret in his mission against kudzu is his lack of time to teach his viewers more.

Wooten gets to the heart of the heart of the matter when he looks inside a log of wood. Wooten’s wife as explained by Wooten himself says he would rather spend the whole day with wood than spend the whole day golfing because of Wooten’s strong passion Alston seemingly enjoys delving into how a typical sawmill runs.
