South Carolina ETV

Radio Listener Information

Public Radio in SC, ETV Radio has universal reach and extraordinary efficiency. Of our eight transmitters, five are 100,000 watts. Reception extends far into North Carolina and Georgia, and completely blankets this state- including all Interstate Highway corridors.

From Network Headquarters in Columbia SCERN provides two 24-hour service of three distinct formats. All communities in our state hear one or more of our stations. Listeners may travel from outside our border through the state and into the next, still following the programs on our network.

Since 1972, the system has grown to serve 283,000 listeners a week with NPR news, classical music, jazz, and variety programs the best of Public Radio. Favorites are Car Talk, A Prairie Home Companion, Performance Today, Radio Reader, Morning Edition and many others.

Four stations broadcast a format consisting of 45% classical music, about 26% news and information, and the remainder jazz, Celtic, acoustic, and entertainment/variety programs. Associated Press affiliation allows state news and weather coverage.

WRJA-FM, Sumter/Columbia, WJWJ-FM, Beaufort/Hilton Head Island, and WLJK-FM, Aiken/Augusta, broadcast an NPR News and conversation format with Jazz on the weekday evenings and overnight on weekends.

WNSC-FM, Rock Hill/Charlotte, broadcasts around-the-clock and hourly NPR newscasts each day.

Automation has also made possible a 24-hour broadcast schedule. We are the primary means through which the Governor's Office of Emergency Preparedness will disseminate vital information in cases of evacuations or other emergencies. We are also the secondary EAS backbone of the state plan.

In each community we serve, our audience consists of listeners with the highest post secondary education and highest household income of any station in each market. Our service reaches both men and women, mostly in the 25-64 year age group.

In our 29 years, SCERN has earned two Peabody Awards and numerous other national awards for programming and public service. It is licensed to the South Carolina Educational Television Commission, an agency of the State of South Carolina.
