Born to Read

Mother with baby

Besides their bundle of joy, new moms leave the hospital with stacks of information meant to help get the baby on the right track.  A Lowcountry group of volunteers is using that post-partum window to educate mothers about the advantages of early reading.

At the mother’s hospital bedside, volunteers with Born To Read explain the benefits and also gift the baby with a new book and a bag full of goodies. The goal is to surround children with books and words from day one.

Checking out books on the mobile library

The aging population in Beaufort County has more time on their hands for leisure than ever before. However,  lack of mobility sometimes puts a sudden halt to many of those pleasures.  But thanks to the recent addition of a bookmobile, the Beaufort County Public Library is making sure nothing comes in the way of seniors reading the latest and greatest books. Not only does the mobile library drive up to their front door, it’s equipped with a lift so that everyone can easily get on board.

But a program called Tail Waggin' Tutors is using man’s best friend to calm the nerves of early readers.

Books

Motherhood is certainly rewarding—but it’s also exhausting!  Playing taxi driver, personal chef, housekeeper, doctor and so much more can zap all of your energy by day’s end.  But a group of moms in Bluffton is going the extra mile to make time for themselves-—and it’s all in the name of literacy.  With the catchy title, I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie, this book club is all about breaking away from the hustle and bustle, while showing their children that there’s always time for a good book.
