Know the difference?
A Hurricane Watch means hurricane conditions are a threat within 48 hours. Review your hurricane plans, keep informed and be ready to act if a warning is issued.
A Hurricane Warning means hurricane conditions are expected within 36 hours. Complete your storm preparations and leave the area if directed to do so by authorities.
Planning is step one.
Hurricane season in the Atlantic begins June 1st and ends November 30th. Hurricane hazards come in many forms, including storm surge, high winds, tornadoes, and flooding. This means it is important for your family to have a plan that includes all of these hazards. You can protect your family and home by preparing. Use the resources below to assist you.
1. Pre-Plan. Prepare.
Preparation is the best protection.
- Prepare. Plan. Be informed. Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane.
- Hurricane Safety Checklist. Create a Hurricane Safety Checklist.
- School Emergency Plans. Like individuals and families, schools, daycare providers should all have site-specific emergency plans.
Everyone needs a plan. Include everyone in your preparation.
- Older South Carolinians. Each person's needs and abilities are unique, but every individual can prepare for an emergency situation.
- Persons with Special Needs. People with special needs may need special accommodation. Take time to plan these accommodations.
Pets need a plan too.
- Pet Emergency Preparedness. Know how to care for your pet in an emergency situation.
2. Evacuation Plan
Know your evacuation route.
- Evacuation Routes from the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Know your evacuation route before it is needed.
- Evacuation Planning for Persons with Disabilities and Caregivers. The elderly and persons with disabilities may need special accommodation. Help them create an evacuation plan.
- South Carolina Department of Public Safety Emergency Traffic Network. SCDPS provides realtime traffic updates, maps, and other resources to assist South Carolinians during an evacuation.
Find Shelter.
- Red Cross National Shelter System. When disaster strikes, know when and where shelters have been opened.
- American Red Cross: Shelter View. A free American Red Cross iPhone application can be downloaded through the iTunes store. Shelter information is updated from the National Shelter System every 30 minutes.
3. Recovery
After an evacuation, to remain safe, it is important to prepare before your return.
- Returning Home After a Hurricane or Flood. Know what supplies and identification you need before you return.
- FEMA Rebuilding Resources.
- After a disaster inform others you are Safe and Well. Safe and Well is a website maintained by the American Red Cross where you can let friends and family know you are safe or search for friends and family.
