Portrait of Rachel Carson
January 21, 2009
In November 2007, South Carolina ETV and ETV Radio was proud to record the world premiere of "Portrait of Rachel Carson," a symphonic work by legendary jazz pianist and radio host Marian McPartland. McPartland is perhaps better known to her many fans through her National Public Radio show, Piano Jazz, which has been produced by ETV Radio since its inception 30 years ago. The program can be heard every Saturday at 8 p.m. on ETV's statewide radio network, as well as around the nation and, indeed, the world.
Through Piano Jazz, McPartland has made evident not only her passion for jazz and jazz education, but also her passion for the environment. In fact, she’s been a devoted environmentalist since first reading Silent Spring, an early work by Rachel Carson about the dangers of chemicals and pesticides. McPartland was so inspired by Carson's dedication to protecting the environment, she made Carson the subject of her newest symphonic work.
During its 2007 world premiere, McPartland played the piece along with the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Donald Portnoy, in Columbia, SC. Since then, "Portrait of Rachel Carson" has created interest and desire from other groups to add this new and exciting work to their repertoire. On Thursday, January 22, 2009, the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Richard Auldon Clark, will perform the piece at Trinity Church in downtown Manhattan at 8 p.m. This program will be telecast live and on-demand.
