The Documentary
A new ETV special, Turner to Cezanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, introduces viewers to Gwendoline and Margaret Davies – two Welsh sisters who put their inherited wealth to use for the betterment of their country. In addition to their philanthropic work, their support of the University of Wales and their patronage of local artists, they also amassed an extensive and amazing collection of Realist, Impressionist and post-Impressionist artworks, from Romantic naturalism through the pre-cursors of what we now call abstract art. The works in this collection, including those by Manet, Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh, provide critical insight into the development of Modern Art in Europe. This program samples the works, guided by Oliver Fairclough, Keeper of the Art Collections at the National Museum of Wales and Dr. Bradford Collins of the USC Art Department.
Premiere of ETV's Turner to Cezanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection: Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 7pm
