The Big Picture

Biomass

For the next three weeks, "The Big Picture" will air several programs in our energy series; and this week, we start with biomass.  Throughout South Carolina's history, agriculture has played a prominent role in our state's economy and this industry could see a dramatic revitalization through biomass, an alternative fuel source.  The Big Picture looks in-depth at biomass, the pros and cons, and why SC has the potential to be a leader in this energy source.

I thought your show on SC's potential for taking a lead role in the Biomass energy sector was very informative. I couldn't help but notice the omission, however, of another untapped resource in our state. Construction sites in SC produce a tremendous amount of wood waste daily. As a recycler of construction waste, we have found the majority of construction waste to be untreated wood. It would be great to see the state assist recyclers in the development of processes to use construction wood waste in a positive way for biomass production. This would divert the wood waste from taking up valuable space in our landfills, and also preserve our beautiful forestry in SC.
