The Big Picture takes a unique look at the role of the military here in South Carolina. There are 93 living recipients of the Medal of Honor, and four of them have South Carolina connections and we’ll talk to each man. We’ll also remember the life of Captain Kimberly Hampton of Easley, the 1st female pilot shot down in Iraq, and SC’s first female casualty of that war. The Big Picture will also talk to recently retired military generals who say Guardsmen in our state should be prepared to be called up to more action as the way in Afghanistan intensifies. We'll have all this along with a tour of a current photography exhibit on display at the Florence Civic Center called, "American Soldier".

SC has the 4th largest highway system in the country, more than two thirds is maintained by the state, and we have lowest gas tax in the Southeast. We travel the state and talk with SC DOT officials about the state of our roads and what it takes to maintain them. We also take an inside look at Columbia's failing water system, a problem that many face in this state.

Twenty five percent of South Carolina children are considered obese, and that number continues to rise. This alarming trend is also showing an increase in obesity related diseases, such as diabetes. Many organizations throughout the state are stepping up and implementing programs throughout the schools and communities to make students more aware of this ongoing problem. The Big Picture takes an in-depth look at some of these programs and the effect they are having on the children of South Carolina.

Clemson's Restoration Institute in Charleston was recently awarded a 45 million dollar grant from the U.S. Dept of Energy to build and run a large wind turbine drive train test facility on the former Naval Base. This is one of the largest grants ever for South Carolina. Is this the tipping point for green energy from wind and what does it mean for South Carolina?
