YAMS and Other Artists
Monday - June 29, 2009
This podcast explores two diverse components of instruction in the Arts in South Carolina Schools. YAMS (Young Appalachian Musicians) in Pickens County Schools are receiving instruction from county residents who are well-schooled in the bluegrass music traditions, and you’ll be amazed at the level of musicianship displayed by these elementary and middle school students. Betty McDaniel is the program coordinator, and she explains how the program began and has grown over its brief existence. The second part of the program is devoted to this year’s Poetry Out Loud competition and the winners of the state recitation contest. Orations by the statewide winner, Shannon Laribo of Ashley Hall, and runner up Tremaine Rapp of Greenwood High School are featured along with contest background information from Susannah Brailsford who directs the program.
