Read Across America, summer camps and single-gender education
Monday - March 08, 2010
Tuesday, March 2nd, was designated as Read Across America Day by the National Education Association commemorating the anniversary of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Now in its 13th year, more than 45 million people participated in Read Across America Day festivities - the annual party with a "purr-pose" that gets kids of all ages excited about reading. NEA President Dennis Van Roekel joins the podcast and reflects on the big event that began with kick-off at the Library of Congress in the nation's capital, where he and the Cat in the Hat were joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, and other public figures who will read to hundreds of elementary school students. NEA's Read Across America is a year-round literacy campaign designed to motivate children to read by making it fun. After reflecting on the past week's events we'll be previewing an upcoming conference for teachers in single-gender classrooms and will have a glimpse at several camps operated by Clemson's Youth Learning Institute. And just in case you missed hearing the names and schools of the five finalists for South Carolina's Teacher of the Year, we'll have that for you too on this week's podcast.
