Race to the Top, math camp, SC-PTA and Darkness To Light, Geofest XXXIX
Monday - March 22, 2010
On Tuesday, March 16, a contingent of educators from the SC Department of Education presented to a panel of judges supplemental information to accompany the state's 1200-plus page application for a share of the Race to the Top funds. Of the $4.35 billion, the USDE will distribute approximately $4 billion directly to states to drive education reform and $350 million to consortia of states that compete in a separate competition to create new college and career-ready assessments. We'll chat with State Superintendent Jim Rex and get his feel on SC's chances on being one of the winners selected from the 15 state finalists. And on this week's podcast we'll hear about the SC Parent Teacher Association's alignment with the SDE in promoting the Darkness to Light program, an effort aimed at preventing child sexual abuse. For students, there's the Wofford College summer BLAM (Bridging Liberal Arts and Mathematics) program for middle and high schoolers and for teachers and other students of geography, there's a preview of Saturday's (March 27th) GEOFEST XXXIX on the USC Columbia campus. Another informative Speaking of Schools podcast!
