Speaking of Schools

First Steps to School Readiness

Monday - June 21, 2010

Since 1999, more than 500,000 young children have become better prepared for school though the programs offered by South Carolina First Steps that strengthen families, improve children's health and well-being, increase the quality of child care and early education opportunities, and help transition rising kindergarteners into school. Every South Carolina county has a First Steps office that identifies local needs and collaborative opportunities to help our state's youngest learners be better prepared for school. This edition of Speaking of Schools focuses on what the future holds for South Carolina First Steps, how the organization is coping with cut backs that nearly all community and state service agencies have experienced and what the organization will be offering families and children during the 2010-11 school year.
