Dennis van Roekel, the President of the National Education Association draws some interesting parallels between last week’s King holiday and the Obama inauguration, as well as how teachers might still capitalize on the “teachable moments” offered by both occurrences. And a frequent Speaking of Schools guest, Dr. Paul Thomas, Assistant professor of Education at Furman, whose work is in the areas of teacher education and the impact of poverty on teaching and learning, has some interesting observations on the manner in which society examines the differences in where we lay blame for poor health care and education achievement.
