The Dark Corner

This program is a journey through the elusive history of the area known as the Dark Corner. An area once defined by murders, moonshining and mayhem, this film defines the boundaries, debunks myths, and tells the story of a people who are tied to the land. People have asked many times “where is the Dark Corner?” and many times the reply was always ‘it’s a little further up the road…’ Told through scholars and storytellers, this film reveals a history from ancient Indians to the modern development of northern Greenville County. Dark Corner Films became inspired not only by its namesake but by the many residents who wanted the true history of the area to be told.

I've loved Glassy Mountain since my grandma first told me the name of it when I was a little boy. I loved getting closer to it going to TP Wood's Store in Tigerville. 35 some odd years later and hundreds of miles away, I still dream of living on that mountain someday. I would like to meet the other grandchildren of the men and women my grandparents and father knew. I am proud to know that I have ties to real Appalachia and not some made for TV reality show. Proud that I saw reality as a child and young man before we all realized what a treasure Glassy Mountain and the Dark Corner really was.

I was born and raised in the Dark Corner and have no intentions of even living far from it. My family came down from the Appalachians many years ago, where they made and ran shine and carried on the tradition in Western NC and on down into North Greenville and Spartanburg Counties. It's what my Mama rubbed on my gums when I was cutting teeth and what I drink today. No harm ever came from some well distilled shine.

I was not born and raised in this area but I have lived here now for about 15 years and call it home. I married a Polk County boy with his Polk county family and ancestry here. I have loved it and the history of this whole area and the beauty of the land and the people I know that are from this area.I just happened upon the show you aired on Dark Corners the other night and my husband and I sat there and enjoyed it so much. Just wanted you to know that the work you do is much needed and appreciated to keep the stories and history alive.

I went to Furman University in Greenville, SC, and never heard of the dark corner. However, I imagine as close as Furman is to the dark corner, it is oh so far away. I'm fascinated by this story. Keep up the good work!

I have heard stories from my elders that I have family connections to the dark corner. Seems there was a fire at a tannery and some falling out of the family. Any information would be appriciated.
