A Christmas Carol: Behind the Magic
A Christmas Carol: Behind the Magic chronicles the history of one of the Southeast's most well-known stage adaptations of the Charles Dickens classic. The documentary begins with the musical comedy's humble beginnings in 1974, and explores how and why the show has grown into a Raleigh-based, community theatre production, annually playing to 30,000 people after a mere 10-show run every December. You'll hear from current and former cast members whose lives have been profoundly impacted by the show, personally and professionally. The show's director and star, Ira David Wood III, has played Ebenezer Scrooge in the show every year since this adaptation debuted, except in 2010, when heart surgery sidelined him from performing one month before the show opened. The documentary goes into particular detail about the events of that year, and gives an indication as to what may happen to the show when Ira David Wood III no longer plays Scrooge.
