No Question This Week Last Week's Answer According to our resident state historian, Dr. Walter Edgar, SC was readmitted to the Union on July 9, 1868: "On 22 May 1868, Congress accepted the new SC Constitution of 1868 and declared the state could have its representatives in Congress as soon as the 14th amendment was ratified. South Carolina ratified the 14th amendment on July 9th [a requirement of readmission to the union]. General Canby on JULY 24th remitted his authority to civilian rule. There is a 1920s source that uses the June 25th date, but NO other reputable SC source [Simkins & Woody, Rogers, Wallace, etc does]. Thus, there are TWO dates in print, but I say July 9th is correct."
