Richard Riley

Richard W. Riley was born January 2, 1933 in Greenville, South Carolina.  
He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and Senate from 1963 to 1977 and was elected Governor in 1978.  As Governor, Riley focused on improving funding and support for education.
In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Riley to the post of Secretary of Education.  
Furman University created the Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics and Public Leadership in his honor. 

The SC Hall of Fame was founded in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1973 to recognize and honor contemporary and past citizens who have made outstanding contributions to South Carolina's heritage, history and progress.
