Local Economic Development Gets Boost from University of S.C.

Friday - July 12, 2013 at 07:52 am

In the last five years, the University of South Carolina has filed more than 400 invention disclosures on behalf of faculty, applied for more than 250 new patent applications with 66 U.S. patents issued, and executed 86 licenses representing 120 technologies. Furthermore, the USC-Columbia Technology Incubator has graduated 31 companies and currently has 45 tenants. And there are now 28 active start-up companies using university technologies, creating  everything from new smartphone apps to fuel cell technology.  And that's why the university recently decided it needed a central department to coordinate all of these activities.

Mike Switzer interviews Bill Kirkland, executive director of USC's new Office of Economic Engagement.  Bill also runs the USC-Columbia Technology Incubator.
