About Riverbanks Roundup

Riverbanks Roundup – ITV is working with the outstanding Riverbanks Zoo and Garden to feature educational aspects of the many zoo animals and their habitats. Each themed-program, which is designed to support elementary science standards, is produced on site at Riverbanks, allowing viewers to go behind-the-scenes with host Katie Mixon to meet the amazing animals and the zoo experts who take care of them.

About the Host

Katie Mixon is the host of Riverbanks Roundup and Coordinator of Interpretive Programs at Riverbanks Zoo. She has been part of the Education Department at Riverbanks Zoo since 2006 and has enjoyed sharing her passion for wildlife and conservation with children and animal lovers of all ages through behind the scenes tours, daily presentations, animal encounters and managing the Education Volunteer Program.

After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from the University of South Carolina, Katie worked as a middle school teacher and actor in a children’s theatre company. Because of her volunteer work with Atlanta Pet Rescue, Katie decided to return to her first passion: Conservation.  Katie earned an Associates of Science in Zoo Animal Technology from Pensacola College in Florida and worked as a Zoo Keeper caring for bats, large reptiles and small mammals. Growing up in South Carolina, Katie enjoyed many days at Riverbanks as a student, and was excited to join the Conservation Education team as a teacher.  Both of Katie’s parents are teachers in South Carolina Public Schools and share her passion for Education.

Katie is also a member of the South Carolina Shakespeare Company, The NiA Theatre Company; she is a Certified Interpretive Guide for the National Association of Interpretation and is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
