ETV Pays Tribute to Domestic Violence Awareness Month With Slate of Programming Throughout October Beginning With Web Cast of AG Silent Witness Ceremony Oct. 1
For Immediate Release
October 1, 2007
Columbia, SC... In conjunction with October's designation as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, ETV will provide an array of programming to shed light on this vital issue.
First, ETV will make available a Web cast of Attorney General Henry McMaster's Silent Witness Ceremony, which takes place on Oct. 1 at 11 a.m on the steps of the State House. Viewers will be able to stream the ceremony by clicking here.
Then, on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m., Andrew Gobeil, host of The Big Picture, will examine why South Carolina consistently ranks in the top 10 for the number of women killed by men. Most recently, South Carolina was rated number seven in the nation according to the Violence Policy Center.
Gobeil will also provide an update on the case of Davetta Roseborough, who was killed by her husband in 2002. He will take a look at why, after five years, this case has not gone to trial.
Roseborough was originally profiled as part of ETV's Remember My Name series, in a program titled Rhonda, Davetta and Marva. This episode, which tells the story of these three women who all died at the hands of their abusers, will precede The Big Picture at 7 p.m. that night, and air again on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
Additional programs in the Remember My Name series will also air on Sundays at 7 pm., including:
- Sunday, Oct. 7 - Breaking the Cycle. This program features a former batterer who tells why he abused his partner and also examines the services available in South Carolina that can help end the cycle of domestic violence.
- Sunday, Oct. 14 - Lorie's Story is the account of a woman who suffered for years at the hands of her abusive husband. She shot and killed him and subsequently served seven years in jail. After she was released, Lorie became a counselor at the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
- Sunday, Oct. 28 - Sylvia's Story. Sylvia endured years of domestic abuse before deciding to end her marriage. One night, fearful of her husband's reprisals, she sought help from local law enforcement, but was told to "go home and lock your bedroom door." Less than three hours later, her estranged husband kicked in her door and shot her three times. Miraculously, she survived.
South Carolina ETV is the state's public educational broadcasting network with 11 television and eight radio transmitters, and a multi-media educational system in more than 2,500 schools, colleges, businesses and government agencies.
