Columbia, SC...Five years after September 11, there is still much healing to be done in a nation that is gripped by fears of another attack. With daily reports revealing new terrorist plots and growing sectarian violence, the sources of division in our society remain ever-present.
However, a new documentary, airing on ETV on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m., brings a different message – a message of hope. The Emmy-nominated Ties That Bind tells the story of people fighting to change stereotypes, to overcome cultural differences and to make connections across racial boundaries.
Four years in the making, Ties that Bind begins by capturing the conversations of seven Chicago women who came together shortly after 9/11 in an effort to discuss what unifies and divides us as a people. These women are leaders of their Jewish, Christian, Muslim, African American, Hispanic and Euro-American communities.
The program also includes interviews with leading interfaith scholars and activists, as well as footage from a series of 12 town hall meetings held across the country. During those meetings, almost 4,000 people from Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities watched the discussions between the seven women, and then engaged one another with their own thoughts and perspectives. Emerging from these conversations were common themes that revealed more similarities than differences, and offered valuable insights from which all Americans can learn.
