Columbia SC...In a far-reaching interview on Wednesday, famed comedian Stephen Colbert, host of “The Colbert Report,” took the unusual step of putting aside his TV alter-ego, and just played himself.
He spoke with ETV Radio’s Mark Quinn about everything from his childhood as the youngest of 11 kids growing up in Charleston, SC, to what he would bring to the ticket as a possible veep candidate.
Colbert was a guest on “The Big Picture on the Radio” to salute his 87-year-old mother, Lorna Colbert, for Mother’s Day.
- Colbert on growing up in a family that had 11 children:
“It’s hard for me to imagine a family any other way than chaotic. It allowed me to not imagine that things would be perfect at holiday time, because there was no way for Christmas morning to go off without a hitch with that many kids.”
- Colbert on dining at Chez Colbert:
“We weren’t allowed to read at the table, whistle at the table, sing at the table. We served the youngest to the oldest, so I would get the food first, which was nice. And I would be ready for seconds first. And my father would quiz us often. He’d sit at the head of the table and he would ask us questions. There was one question that I got asked at every quiz session--if we were doing questions at the table. He would ask one question, always.
And that question was, what are the three layers of a glacier?”
...There would be a discussion of religion. It was a devout family, and my father’s idea of fun was to read like sort of French Christian philosophy, like read Jacques Maritain...”
- Colbert’s immediate response when asked whether, if any of the three candidates running for the presidency came to him and said, “Stephen, we want you to run as our vice president”:
“Yes.”
- Colbert on what would you bring to the ticket:
“Chutzpah.”
