For Immediate Release
November 5, 2007

Columbia, SC...From Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize to NBC's "The Today Show" broadcasting from "The Ends of the Earth," the topic of global warming continues to dominate today's headlines. But how do South Carolinians feel about the issue?

The latest Winthrop/ETV poll, released last week, asked 522 registered likely Republican primary voters and 534 registered likely Democratic primary voters, to share their thoughts on global warming. The results revealed widely opposing opinions between the two groups.

While almost 71 percent of Democratic respondents felt that "global warming is real and is occurring now," almost 40 percent of Republicans said "the effects of global warming are being exaggerated."

We’d like to get your thoughts on Global Warming.  Which of the following statements comes closest to your beliefs:

  Democrats Republicans
Global warming is real and is occurring now 70.8 36.9
Global warming is real but won't be a problem for a long time 8.7 12.2
The effects of global warming are being exaggerated 6.8 38.5
Global warming is not real 2.7 6.9
Not sure [volunteered] 10.2 5.1
Refused [volunteered] 0.8 0.4

The Winthrop/ETV poll has a margin of error of plus/minus 4.29 percent for likely Republican primary voters and plus/minus 4.24 percent for likely Democratic voters.
