Ten South Carolina WWII veterans will tell their compelling war stories on Carolina Stories: Shoebox Memories on November 8th at 8:00 p.m. on South Carolina ETV.

Two of the American war heroes are South Carolina natives, while the others joined the Palmetto state after retirement, and now reside in Beaufort, South Carolina.  The recollections that will be featured on Shoebox Memories are of Dr. Charles Aimar, Fred Anderson, Elaine Barlett, Fly Flanagan, Hal Harriman, the late Bob Holly, San Najarian, Earl Rogers, George Scuffos, and Gernard Warshaw.

The war heroes give their description of the events of WWII, and the thoughts they had while at war. The late Bob Holly remembers his troubling encounters with the Battle of Bulge, where he describes it as “very cold without overcoats” on Christmas Eve, and his horrific injury that was soon forgotten when he met with a well known general. Fred Anderson recalls the tragic event of the Malmedy Massacre, where he witnessed his enemies brutalized his fellow soldiers. Fly Flanagan shares how he earned the nickname “Fly” as he was seconds from being trapped in his plane during unexpected explosions.

Each of the South Carolina veterans reflects on their experiences from WWII events such as D-Day, the Invasion of Normandy, the Malmedy Massacre, the B-17 bombing in Cologne, the Burning of Manila, and the Liberation of Dachau.

The thirty minute program explores many well-known events of WWII, but from the in-depth perspective of the veterans that risked their lives. Shoebox Memories repeats Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 8:00 p.m. on The South Carolina Channel.
