Columbia, SC…A new program based on a baseball short story that Alex Sanders presented in 2010 to the National Baseball Hall of Fame will debut November 1 at 9:00 p.m. on ETV.
“Southern Lens” presents “Cards Against a Wall,” a 25-minute documentary of Sanders’ memories of three mesmerizing South Carolinians from baseball’s golden age -- Shoeless Joe Jackson, Van Lingle Mungo and Bobo Newsom.
Jackson was raised outside of Greenville and became one of the greatest players in baseball. He was never taught how to read and write as a child and his signature today is the rarest in all of sports. He was banned from baseball on allegations of fixing the 1919 World Series –despite the fact that he had the highest batting average of both teams in the Series.
Mungo, a Pageland native who pitched from 1931 to 1945, had a mighty fastball that earned him 120 wins and 1,242 strikeouts. Today, he may be better known for a 1969 bossa nova song bearing his name by songwriter Dave Frishberg and his significant contribution to African Americans in the South.
Newsom, born and raised in Hartsville, was one of only two pitchers whose career spanned from Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle. Between 1929 and 1953 on 10 different Major League teams, he won 211 games and had 2,082 strikeouts. Known for his gift of gab, Newsom is immortalized in the poem “Line Up for Yesterday” by Ogden Nash.
Charleston’s Tim Fennell directed the film, which was shot throughout South Carolina, including narration by Sanders as he sat in center field of the Joe Riley ballpark in Charleston. Fennell, Dave Brown and Brooks Quinn co-produced the film.
