Columbia, SC...During an interview on Friday with ETV news and public affairs Managing Editor and Host Andrew Gobeil, on "The Big Picture on the Radio," New Mexico Governor and Presidential hopeful Bill Richardson said what he would do if elected president, regarding Shoeless Joe Jackson*.
"I would get him in the Hall of Fame at the very least," said Richardson, who once had a tryout with the-then Kansas City Athletics. "Here is a guy who was a superb player...now I am sure Shoeless Joe and that other group, maybe they are not 100 percent pure, but getting in the Hall of Fame should be based on ability and your performance. This was one of the great players, so I would probably lead the effort to get him into the Hall of Fame. I have been there to Cooperstown, I have been to Hall of Fame events before when I was a Congressman. I love baseball, you know that."
Later in the program, Jeff Greenfield, senior political correspondent for CBS News, applauded Gobeil's question to Richardson and the fact that this line of questioning goes a long way in helping to push candidates out of their scripted comfort zones. He also lent a sympathetic voice to Shoeless Joe Jackson's cause.
"That is a great question because a lot of people think he was the victim...that he actually played well in the series if you look at the stats. He did go along with it. But then I think he changed his mind."
In still other news, Greenfield said of former Alaskan Senator Mike Gravel's performance during the debate, "It certainly did occur to me that Mike Gravel does not drink the decaf."
Gobeil's other guests on the program, which airs statewide on ETV Radio news stations Fridays from 9-10 a.m., were Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, former Senator Harold Ford, the host of MSNBC's "Scarborough Country,"Joe Scarborough, and Brad Warthen and Mike Fitts, the editorial page editor and associate editor of The State newspaper's editorial board, respectively.

*Jackson, a Greenville native, was banned from baseball in 1921 for his alleged involvement in "fixing" the 1919 World Series. Jackson was one of eight Chicago White Sox players accused of purposely losing the series to the Cincinnati Reds. Although he was acquitted of criminal charges, he is still ineligible for induction into the Hall of Fame.
