Columbia SC…Maurice “Moss” Bresnahan, the president and CEO of ETV, will depart the statewide television and radio network in mid-November to take over the reins at public television station KCTS in Seattle, WA.

In making the announcement, Robert M. Rainey, chairman of the South Carolina ETV Commission, said, “We will miss the energy and vision Moss brought to ETV. Despite having a modest budget with which to operate, his diligence and creativity resulted in a body of work that makes ETV the envy of public television systems throughout the country.”

Rainey said he will disclose plans on who will assume duties as interim head of ETV in the near future.

Reflecting on his departure, Bresnahan said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as ETV’s president for the past seven years. Thanks to the support of our viewers, listeners, good corporate citizens and legislators—along with the hard work of our talented staff—it has been a productive and thrilling time. With all the technological changes taking place, I believe that the educational mission of ETV has never been more important. Because of outstanding work on the part of the ETV staff, this organization is poised for even greater achievement in the digital age.”

While at the helm of ETV, Bresnahan instituted a vast array of initiatives—from the award-winning “Southern Lens” and “Carolina Stories” series that celebrate the history and culture of the South, to innumerable educational outreach and teacher-training programs.

Under his aegis, ETV secured $20 million in digital funding; built a system that included a state-of-the-art HD service; and originated the South Carolina Channel—which offers a slate of local CSPAN-style presentations and a vast array of programming from gardening, to Bluegrass Music concerts, to high school sports.

Under his guidance, numerous educational initiatives also thrived. Teacherline, ETV’s professional teacher-development system, has been utilized by PBS as a model for its other public television stations. ETV also worked closely with the SC State Department of Education and the K-12 Technology Committee, to engineer the transition of instructional services for classrooms from the traditional satellite feed-system to an online-video service.

Consequently, since its inception in 2004, StreamlineSC has attracted millions of views and is utilized in every school district in the state.

Responding to the role the Internet plays in the lives of today’s schoolchildren, Bresnahan also oversaw the expansion of Knowitall.org, with such features as RiverVenture, Career Aisle, Keep it Real, Civil Rights Road Trip and Artopia.

Additionally, his commitment to advancing good citizenship resulted in ETV’s emphasis on public affairs programming. The premiere of “The Big Picture” and “The Big Picture on the Radio,” and an ambitious slate of in-state debates, coverage of the conventions and plans for Election Day, have been a priority.

In that vein, Bresnahan oversaw the creation of the Winthrop/ETV Polls which have consistently garnered national media attention. He was also the driving force behind establishing media partnerships to leverage ETV’s programs and initiatives.

The emphasis on news and public affairs has led to more news and talk on public radio, growing listenership by 12 percent. Much of the state now has access to both News/Classical and News/Talk formats.

Bresnahan’s belief that ETV must be community-minded also resulted in the creation of the ETV Road Shows that traveled to nearly every county in SC, spotlighting local gems. His vision sparked high-impact community events that utilized TV, radio, the Internet and outreach efforts to create widespread awareness for the network’s Ready to Vote, Teen Survival Week, Remember My Name and Give Me Shelter initiatives.

Most recently, ETV advocated for the conversion of analog instructional channels into a statewide educational wireless broadband service for schools, students and teachers. The concept is currently being studied by a legislative committee with the goal of developing an RFP.

South Carolina ETV is the state's public educational broadcasting network with 11 television and eight radio transmitters, and a multi-media educational system in more than 2,500 schools, colleges, businesses and government agencies. Using television, radio and the web, SCETV's mission is to enrich lives by educating children, informing and connecting citizens, celebrating our culture and environment and instilling the joy of learning.
