Columbia, SC... For more than 30 years, Marian McPartland has welcomed the biggest names in jazz to her public radio series, Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz, where she and guests reminisce and perform jazz standards as well as off-the-wall improvisations. In 2011, McPartland invited pianist Jon Weber to succeed her as host of Piano Jazz Rising Stars, a one-hour program which features the leading young performers on the scene today. Weber, a seasoned jazz master himself, welcomes guests such as pianist Taylor Eigsti, guitarist Julian Lage, alto saxophonist/vocalist Grace Kelly, vocalist Sachal Vasandani, and Thelonious Monk Competition winner, pianist Kris Bowers. Other guests include Jason Moran, Hiromi, Stefon Harris and Aaron Diehl.
Piano Jazz Rising Stars will continue the spirit of artistic innovation that has been integral to Piano Jazz since its beginning. Sharing McPartland’s musical sensibilities, Weber likewise has displayed the musical deftness required to adapt to each guest’s stylings and the variety of genres that jazz expresses. Weber, a veteran performer who has played in music festivals around the world, has compositions and performances that have met with critical and popular acclaim. Weber brings an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz history and repertoire to the program. He respects McPartland’s vision for the series and is building upon that vision while providing new perspectives and opinions, and continuing the commitment to explore the vibrant jazz landscape. Weber brings a flawless technique, vast knowledge of jazz and its history, a love of the music, and the ability to get the very best out of the amazing artists who visit the show.
Jon Weber is counted among the most brilliant minds in jazz today. The New York based, Wisconsin/Chicago raised Weber is a truly virtuosic piano player. His flawless technique and an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz history have made him an internationally renowned ambassador for the music. He is an excellent interviewer and a proven guest host who has won much praise from the Piano Jazz listener audience. But most importantly, McPartland considers him to be a worthy successor as host.
