Columbia, SC...While the family scurries about the house with mops, brooms and window cleaner in hand, let mom kick back on the couch and enjoy ETV's afternoon lineup of programs that celebrate all mothers, including everything from the wit and wisdom of Erma Bombeck, to a humorous examination of the challenges of being a 21st century mom, that includes ideas on how to overcome them.

Mothers and Sons: Raising Compassionate Men
4 p.m.

The relationship between a mother and her son is a unique and incomparable connection. Mothers and Sons: Raising Compassionate Men explores the powerful bond between mothers and sons, and the important role that attachment can play in helping a boy develop compassion and empathy as he grows into a man.

Hosted by Emmy Award-winning executive producer Helene Lerner, this program highlights a diverse group of mother-son pairs talking about their relationships and sharing touching stories of the successes they’ve celebrated as well as the struggles they’ve endured.

Among those in the documentary are CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien appearing with her twin sons; Massachusetts juvenile court judge Leslie Harris and his mother, Mary; Carol Kronenwetter, a clinical psychologist from California, and her sons, Aaron, 22, and David, 18; and Shelly Lazarus, chairman and CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide and mother of two grown sons.

At 4:30 p.m., Erma Bombeck: Legacy of Laughter is a touching and funny program that celebrates the life of one of America’s best loved humorists. Recollections from family and friends along with photographs and rare home movies tell the story of her life and career. Phil Donahue, a family friend and host of the award-winning talk show Donahue narrates.

Through archival photographs, video clips and personal memorabilia, this program traces Bombeck's life, from her childhood during the Great Depression to her work as a women's rights activist.

Author, lecturer, television producer, ERA supporter, wife and mother, Bombeck was a renaissance woman with a unique perspective on life. As Donahue notes “…of her it certainly must be said, and can be said, without exaggeration, we shall never see her likes again.”

Then at 5 p.m., Motherhood Manifesto airs featuring moving personal stories combined with humorous animation, expert commentary and hilarious old film clips that tell the tale of what happens to working mothers and families in America.

The show also sheds light on how some employers and public policy-writers can make paid family leave, flexible working hours, part-time parity, universal healthcare, excellent childcare, after school programs and realistic living wages a reality for American families.

The afternoon wraps up at 6 p.m. with The Remarkable Red Hat Society. This enlightening documentary chronicles the beginnings and evolution of the Red Hat Society, a global women's movement that’s changing the perception of aging women.

This sorority for women over the age of 50 has grown from an eight-member social club to a cultural phenomenon. This ever-expanding movement, founded in 1998 by Sue Ellen Cooper, allows grandmothers, mothers and daughters from all walks of life to briefly put aside their responsibilities and obligations in the pursuit of fun, friendship and activities which include motorcycle-riding, line-dancing, synchronized swimming, scrapbooking and even sky diving.

From women who are coping with widowhood or illness to other life changes, this funny and warm program spotlights the nurturing network of friends who counsel, inspire and help inject a little silliness back into the ladies’ lives.
