Columbia, SC...Trey Dendrinos, 14, an eighth-grade home-schooled student from Lexington, took first place Friday in a statewide contest held to choose the winner of the SC Geographic Bee, organized by National Geographic and sponsored by JPMorgan Chase.

Trey, who qualified for the contest through FACE Homeschools in West Columbia, won when he correctly responded to: "The city of Los Angeles, located in southern California, is affected by a hot, dry wind believed to be named after the canyon through which it often blows. Name this wind." The correct response is "Santa Ana."
For his efforts he was rewarded with a check for $100, a National Geographic globe, and an all-expenses paid trip for him and a guest to Washington, D.C. to participate in the national finals.
The national finals will air on ETV on Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m.
In order to win the competition, Trey was the last person left standing in a field of 100 contestants-from fourth through eighth-grades-drawn from throughout the state.
The first runner-up was Nathan Berry, 12, a seventh-grader from Rock Hill who is home-schooled. He qualified for the contest through Fort Mill Area Homeschoolers. David Tucker, 14, an eighth-grader from Hammond School in Columbia, took second runner-up honors. Nathan and David each won a National Geographic globe, in addition to $75 and $50, respectively.
