Lake View Elementary/Middle School Receives Library-Makeover

"Design By the Book" Transformation to Take Place on June 13 and 14

For Immediate Release
June 7, 2006

Columbia, SC...At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, Lake View Elementary/Middle School l ibrarian Eula Page will walk into her library. But on this day, it will not be business as usual.

She will be led into the room wearing a blindfold as school staff, volunteers and ETV cameras eagerly await her reaction to the “big reveal”--her completely redesigned library.  And judging from the expression on her face two months ago (see attached photo), when her school won ETV and the State Department of Education’s (SDE) “Design By the Book” makeover prize, it will be a good one.

A team of seven volunteers, including ETV staff, will band together to remodel the library in a little over 24 hours, beginning the morning of June 13. ETV television crews will also be on-hand to record their progress.  The makeover will include equipment upgrades and new books, and feature a “Movie Set” theme, but in order to keep it a surprise for the winner, all other specifics about the renovations have been embargoed.

“We’ve got big plans to create an exciting and fresh look for this room that will really make students want to hang out here,” said ETV set designer Jay Collins, who is also serving as the construction foreman for the library redesign.  “But a pack of wild librarians couldn’t drag the details out of me.”

Bobbi Kennedy, vice president of Education for ETV, said, “We’re so happy to be able to partner with the Department of Ed to give Lake View its new library.  This is a great example of state and local agencies and sponsors working together to make a difference in their communities.”

On April 6, Lake View Elementary/Middle in Lake View, won the second “Design By the Book” contest, besting teams from two other schools, R.H. Rollings Middle School of the Arts from Summerville and Whittaker Elementary School from Orangeburg.  The three finalist schools were chosen from the over 60 entries that poured into the SDE in late 2005.

This month’s transformation, as well as the April contest, will be broadcast into schools across the state this fall via ETV’s educational satellite system.

The first “Design By the Book” contest renovated Reuben Elementary School in Newberry in 2004, with over $7000 in upgrades, including $3000 in new books.  The program was also recognized by American Library Association with a Certificate of Commendation.

Design By the Book is a project of ETV and the SDE.  Sponsors include the South Carolina Association of School Librarians, the South Carolina Association for Educational Technology, Follett Library Resources, Sagebrush/Spectrum, Sylvan Dell Publishing and East Educational Products.

South Carolina ETV is the state's public educational broadcasting network with 11 television transmitters, 8 radio frequencies and a multi-media educational system in more than 2,500 schools, colleges, businesses and government agencies. Using television, radio and the web, SCETV's mission is to enrich lives by educating children, informing and connecting citizens, celebrating our culture and environment and instilling the joy of learning.
